Private Parties McGillin's Olde Ale House

mcgillin's ale house

Get your Christmas spirit (& spirits) at McGillin’s, Philadelphia’s original pop up bar with over-the-top decor since 1860 and holiday drink prices that don’t pop UP during the holidays. Make it a tradition to stop by before/after shopping & Christmas shows for meal/drinks. McGillin’s Olde Ale House is like a Winter Wonderland with hundreds of ornaments, bows and strings of lights. Get this season’s Eagles Super Mug for & get $2 refills of Bud Light — every Eagles game — all season long! We’ll be serving our famous Iggletini & other Eagles-themed drink specials. Doyle’s service even impresses first-time customers.

Spotlight On: McGillin's Olde Ale House

Multi-color flowers are perched on the window sill, and the neon sign “McGillin's Olde Ale House” hangs proudly from the top of the building. Philadelphia’s history is some of the most fascinating in the United States. Not only did our city lay the framework for the founding of our country, but we set precedents with our shops, architecture, bars, restaurants, and more. It’s no surprise then that the oldest bar in Philadelphia has a fascinating history, and it remains one of Philly’s go-to spots nearly 160 years after it opened. Ma McGillin finally passed away in 1937 at the ripe old age of 90, passing management of McGillin’s along to her daughter, Mercedes McGillin Hooper, one of 13 children to be raised on the bar’s second floor.

The tavern grew to include the oyster house next door, the back alley/washroom and the house upstairs. It’s a long weekend and that means one more night to party at McGillin’s. We realize that wait times are sometimes long & thank you for your patience.

BEER & MERCH TO-GO

McGillin’s served blue beer in honor of Villanova’s National Basketball Championship in 2016 and again in 2018. Le Bec Fin, which kicked off Philadelphia’s restaurant renaissance in 1970, closes and its sign is added to collection at McGillin’s. Deux Cheminees and Strawbridge & Clothiers signs added to McGillin’s collection. The former opened in 1970s and the latter in 1868. When it closes in 2008, its sign is added to McGillin’s sign collection. McGillin’s Olde Ale House celebrates 100th anniversary.

‘Yo, Joe!’

McGillin’s once again served green beer, in an unsuccessful effort to replicate the Eagles’ win of 2018. Troegs Independent Brewing became the official brewer of McGillin’s 3 house beers – McGillin’s Real Ale, McGillin’s Genuine Lager & McGillin’s 1860 IPA. From 1995 until its closure in 2020, the beers were brewed by Stoudt’s Brewing. At one time, McGillin’s sold more Stoudt’s beer than any other bar in PA. McGillin’s made history – celebrated 150th anniversary with giant party, visit from Budweiser Clydesdales and introduction of McGillin’s 1860 IPA. McGillin’s Olde Ale House threw open its doors the year Lincoln was elected president.

Things were a lot different at McGillin’s back in Doyle’s early days. The bar only took cash, allowed smoking, and charged 45 cents for a mug of Genny Cream Ale. He didn’t see active combat, but the experience — his first outside of Philadelphia — changed his life. He’s still able to easily recite Korean words and phrases, and recalls with fondness the people he met there. Doyle, who lives in Andorra, was born in South Philly and raised in the Tasker Homes, where he was the middle child of seven in an Irish-Catholic family. Doyle was so stoic and observant that the staff thought he was a cop.

The Oldest Bar In Philadelphia Has A Fascinating History

In 1910, the bar celebrated its 50th anniversary with a new brick facade and officially changed its name to McGillin’s Olde (the "e" seems to have been dropped in recent years) Ale House. Catherine “Ma” McGillin, who had taken over operation of the establishment after her husband passed away in 1901, managed to carry the bar through Prohibition by hiring a chef. She served food and ice cream on the first floor and “tea” (i.e. bootleg liquor) on the second.

The list reads like the social registry, including some of Philadelphia’s most prominent citizens. Its sign added to McGillin’s iconic sign collection when it closes in 1987. Its sign added to McGillin’s sign collection when it closes in 1997. Civil War ends, Union Soldiers, grateful for their survival and for their hard fought victory, return to McGillin’s to celebrate with Pop McGillin’s  cellared ales. Although Lincoln visits Philadelphia, we have no proof that he visits McGillin’s. Of course, we have no proof that he doesn’t either.

The 10 Most Essential Things to Do on Your (First) Visit to Philly

This month marks 50 years for Doyle atMcGillin’s, which opened on Drury Street near 13th in 1860,and in true Philly fashion, the bar is throwing a yearlong partyin his honor. Festivities begin Saturday, with an open-to-all party featuring surprise guests at the bar from noon to 5 p.m. Celebrations will continue throughout the year, with specials like Doyle dollar dog days, and will culminate on St. Patrick’s Day. He’s also met Chase Utley, watched Jason Kelce play cards in McGillin’s, and worked the bar during the Phillies 2008 World Series parade, the busiest day he’s ever seen. And that’s how Doyle, 79, a married father of two and grandfather of four, came to be the longest-serving bartender at Philly’s oldest-operating bar.

Hooper ran the establishment with her nephew Doc for the next 21 years before selling it to brothers Henry Spaniak and Joe Shepaniak (who spelled their names differently) in 1958. Located on a tiny alley around the corner from City Hall, McGillin’s should be on your list if you’re looking for an authentic Philadelphia spot for a relaxed dinner or friendly drinks. For more than 150 years, McGillin’s Olde Ale House has been serving up cold beer, solid bar food and friendly service to its loyal patrons, who come in all types. "I met Chase Utley, Moose Johnston came in one night," Doyle recalled.

So one night when the doorman had to use the bathroom, he asked Doyle to watch the door and he did. “I would stand by the door, look around, and just have a couple of drinks,” he said. My parents also instilled in me the value of giving back — always emphasizing the importance of having empathy — walking in other people’s shoes. I suppose that’s part of the reason big transitions and decisions have never been hard for me to make. In the summer before my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to go to Israel, and as it turned out, I stayed for my entire senior year. In Israel, I felt connected in a way I had never been before. I graduated and went to New York City to study painting and drawing at the School of Visual Arts. One day, I met an artist on the street selling these amazing paintings for just $200.

When her sister died a year later she took in her three kids and cared for them as if they were her own. She worked two jobs to keep the family afloat, and when we furnished her house, she gave the larger room to the kids and slept in the basement. She cried for the first time in years when she saw those kids jump up and down with happiness. The next day we posted her video online and a person commented “Why did she have six kids if she couldn’t pay for them? ” I cringe at all the assumptions people make about poverty in this country. A vast population in America is just one paycheck or one emergency away from calamity.

McGillins Olde Ale House Is Philadelphia's Oldest Historical Bar

The Sons of Ben are the first Philadelphia Union supporters club, and use the Philadelphia civic colors of light blue and yellow as opposed to the darker shades officially used by the team. The Sons of Ben began during a flurry of rumors regarding Major League Soccer’s negotiations with investors regarding a potential team in the Philadelphia region. Office parties, birthdays, anniversaries, retirement parties, holiday parties, luncheons and baptisms. That was the extent of Doyle’s application and interview process.

Latino-Owned Restaurants to Check Out in Philadelphia

Don’t expect lighting-speed service if your visit falls during a weekend or weeknight special (which is basically every day, considering there’s always something on offer). That said, the staff hustle hard to keep service moving. If you can, seek out a barstool in front of barman John Doyle, who’s as much legend as the place itself (he’s been behind the bar at McGillin’s for more than 40 years). Typically includes Pumpkin Martinis, Oktoberfest beers and a rotating list of German  and pumpkin food specials including Pumpkin Mac & Cheese, Pork Pumpkin Apple Cider.

Philly's Oldest Tavern

They now own the historic tavern with their son, Christopher Mullins, Jr. McGillin’s Olde Ale House opened in 1860 and has survived not 1, but 2 pandemics — one in 1918 and the other in 2020! Owner Chris Mullins, Sr. locked the doors on March 16, 2020 (1 day before St Patrick’s Day) and then gleefully re-opened them about a year later. Modelo has paired with the International Rescue Committee, an NGO that responds to humanitarian crises and helps people rebuild their lives. More than 100 years ago, Christopher’s grandparents immigrated to America making McGillin’s especially proud to be part of this campaign that helps immigrants get a fighting chance here.

But it’s interacting with everyday people that Doyle loves best. On Saturdays and on St. Patrick’s Day and New Year’s Day.

This deep amber-colored ale boasts flavors of grapefruit and pine balanced by a hint of spice and complex malty notes of caramel and toffee. The use of whole flower hops creates a bright, citrusy aroma. But his big break came when the downstairs bartender broke abottle over an unruly customer’s head (the patron had reachedbehind the bar to serve himself). Doyle had to cover the bar whenhis coworker was hauled out by police in handcuffs. Henjes said Doyle is so proud of his job he hands out his business card to everyone he meets (he gave me one after I interviewed him at McGillin’s this week, in case I forgot where he worked or why I was there). They married in 1970 and had twin daughters six years later.

That’s shortly after the Liberty Bell cracked and long before ground was broken for Philadelphia City Hall. The beer taps have been flowing since 1860 — making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia and one of the oldest taverns in the country. Cover charge with in/out privileges (if we have capacity). And that’s how Doyle, 79, a married father of two and grandfatherof four, came to be the longest-serving bartender at Philly’soldest-operating bar.

When Doyle’s wife stopped working to take care of the kids, his part-time job at McGillin’s helped supplement their income. As he told the story of how he met his wife, Laura, in the late ‘60s at the Jersey Shore, Doyle looked left, then right, and leaned in. His first job was “huckstering,” or selling tomatoes, bananas, and other produce door-to-door as a kid. From there, he worked at a Dairy Queen, a soda shop, and sold newspapers at Municipal Stadium.

While young 20-somethings fill the place for karaoke on Friday nights, happy hours at McGgillin’s are typically filled with a very diverse crowd. Doyle earned a "Best of Philly" award in 2010 when he was named the city's best bartender, and his wife, Laura Doyle, said all these years later she doesn't mind sharing him with the rest of the city. As Doyle gets ready to turn 80, he's scaled back his schedule to one day a week, but he's now worked for three generations of owners, and his tenure has spanned eight Philadelphia mayors.

McGillin’s is celebrating bartender John Doyle’s 50th work anniversary with a yearlong party

The celebration begins this Saturday at McGillin’s and culminates next St. Patrick’s Day, which will be Doyle’s 50th at the bar, said Christopher Mullins Jr., co-owner of McGillin’s. But his big break came when the downstairs bartender broke a bottle over an unruly customer’s head (the patron had reached behind the bar to serve himself). Doyle had to cover the bar when his coworker was hauled out by police in handcuffs. Inspired by his new gig, Doyle attended a six-week course at Ronnie’s Bartending School (he still keeps a tiny laminated copy of his 1975 diploma in his wallet) and began tending the bar upstairs at McGillin’s. “I’ve been here for 20 years and I still find something new hanging up on the walls every day. Every single picture holds some type of memory,” says Gabby Rubery, Manager of McGillin’s.

He once served two men a couple of martinis and some stout beers and was shocked when they left him a $500 tip — his biggest ever — which he split with the other bartender working that day. Thankfully, our team came hungry because the chef spoiled us. They served us crab cakes and mussels, both perfectly paired with a cold Cape May Orange Crushin’ It and Bay Daze. The food and beers at McGillin’s will not disappoint and the menu has an array of choices. John Doyle is considered an icon in Philadelphia. The beloved McGillin's bartender is credited with being a matchmaker, saving marriages and pouring countless drinks while working at Philadelphia's oldest continually operating tavern.

Its light body and tart profile make it refreshing, with notes of cherry and lime showcasing what vacation should taste like. Philadelphia has undoubtedly changed throughout the years, but McGillin’s bar has remained true to its roots. The architecture of the building is timeless; large yellow windows complement the red bricks that make up the establishment.

In 2007, the national trade magazine Nightclub and Bar included McGillin's in its Editors' Choice Top 100 bars and clubs in the United States. There is a ship bell and a cow bell behind the bar which the bartenders ring when they get a great tip. They also ring it to "gong" or "boo" a bad karaoke singer.

Experiences

The building first opened its doors at the start of the Gilded Age, when the surrounding White Mountains were rapidly transforming into a premier vacation hotspot. Artists in particular were among the people to visit the most frequently, often staying in barns while seeking unique natural landmarks to paint. Recognizing the economic potential all those tourists represented, local entrepreneurs began to construct their own inns and hotels. Two people to pursue this line of work were Cyrus and Marcia Gale, who converted their family’s farmhouse in Jackson, New Hampshire, into a hotel called the “Eagle Mountain House” during the 1870s. The Gale’s farm quickly became one of the most popular places to stay in the region, especially since it was located deep in the wilderness. In fact, most guests could only reach the retreat after following a trail that cut deep through the verdant woodland outside of downtown Jackson.

To host the sheer number of travelers interested in staying at the Eagle Mountain House, the Gales eventually enlarged the building considerably to the point where it could entertain some 125 tenants. In fact, the Eagle Mountain House had expanded into an actual resort, which offered all kinds of recreational activities to experience on-site. Some of the events included dance parties that the hotel organized with its own orchestra. It even managed to be self-sufficient, with the Gales using the surrounding farmland as a reliable source for food.

Perhaps the greatest testimony to its enduring prestige was when the U.S. Secretary of the Interior listed the Eagle Mountain House on the U.S. The Eagle Mountain House remains one of the country’s best retreats, thanks in large part to the dedication demonstrated by its current owner, The Heaton Companies. The future of this fantastic location has never looked brighter.

Winter offers world-renowned cross-country skiing, as Jackson Village is winter's #1 cross-country ski area in the Eastern United States, and the mountain range is frosted with a blanket of snow. In 1931, Arthur Gale expanded the golf course to nine holes and in 1937 hired world-famous Beno Rybizka to run the first organized skiing in the Mount Washington Valley. For more than ninety years, the Gales presided over the two Eagle Mountain Houses.

Devastated by the fire and with his health declining, Cyrus Gale sold the property to his son Arthur, who designed the current Eagle Mountain House in Colonial Revival style and selected Roswell  Ward of Intervale to complete the construction. To reduce the risk of the new hotel experiencing the same fate as the first and many others of the era, Arthur installed the first fire suppression system in a New Hampshire resort. Under Arthur Gale's ownership, the hotel doubled in size with an addition to the southern end completed in 1929, matching the design and materials used in the original construction. Found in the heart of the White Mountains, the Eagle Mountain House & Golf Club sits on a scenic hilltop in Jackson, New Hampshire.

Golf was quickly increasing in popularity and in 1931, Arthur converted a portion of the property’s farmland and pasture into a nine-hole golf course. Today, the Eagle Mountain House Golf Club leases the course from local ownership and is responsible for maintenance and operation during the golf season. In the winter, the course serves as a vital section of the nationally acclaimed Jackson Ski Touring Foundation’s extensive cross-country trail network. The Chadbournes continued to operate the property and make improvements. In addition, the original hotel rooms were renovated to include private baths and in 1959, the swimming pool was added. With the Chadbournes’ retirement in 1973, the hotel left Gale family ownership for the first time in over 90 years when it was sold to the Clarkes and Kenyons.

(Other changes he implemented involved installing such iconic features like the expansive verandah and historic elevator.) But Arthur’s momentous stewardship of the Eagle Mountain House came to an unfortunate end with his death in 1957. His sister, Marcia Gale Chadbourne, and her family carried on his legacy for the next few decades, until her retirement during the 1970s. The Chadbournes subsequently sold their interest in the resort to a new ownership group, thus marking the end of nearly 90 years of continuous operation by the same family. Nevertheless, the Eagle Mountain House managed to preserve its fantastic reputation.

Eagle Mountain House & Golf Club has a history and heritage as rich as that of Jackson, NH itself. The extension of rail service to Bartlett in the mid-1800s transformed the idyllic artists' colony of Jackson Village into a tourist destination. By 1890, the property had expanded to Eagle Hall and Eagle Mountain House with lodging for 125 guests. Both the Hall and House were destroyed by a fire in May 1915; the barn and garage, located a short distance from the main hotel buildings, were spared.

Future plans include restoration and renovation of the property while preserving its historic character, ensuring the Eagle Mountain House will be welcoming guests for generations to come. He immediately left a significant impact on the building’s identity, overseeing a massive renovation that rebuilt the structure from the ground up. In doing so, he gave the Eagle Mountain House its well-known colonial-inspired appearance. Over the following years, Arthur Gale continued to enhance the appeal of the Eagle Mountain House as its national reputation grew stronger. Indeed, he specifically commissioned yet another massive renovation on the eve of the Great Depression that practically doubled the size of the building.

Ocean Liner vs Cruise Ship What are the Differences?

ocean liner vs cruise ship

Adam's goal is to enhance your cruising adventures with practical tips and insightful advice, making each of your journeys unforgettable. The Titanic was famously declared “unsinkable” due to its design, which included a double-bottom hull and 16 watertight compartments. The doors were designed to close manually or automatically at the water level.

Disadvantages of Cruise Ships

But it is difficult to compare the design of ocean liners and cruise ships. While they do share a common history, they are two separate points on the timeline, with only a small overlap in between. Speed, agility and hull strength are the main differences between ocean liners and cruise ships. An ocean liner has the primary purpose of transporting passengers between continents, so streamlined deep v-hulls that can withstand punishing conditions are in order. And while cruise ships can do that (think repositioning or transcontinental cruises), it is not what they are built for.

It makes little sense for Ocean Liners to be built to specifically cross the oceans. They are both built for leisure and as a direct means of transport. When cruising, the onboard experience is often equally as important as the destinations visited. She regularly sails the route between New York and Southampton and she was specifically designed to deal with weather conditions and storms in the Atlantic during winter. Yes, a cruise ship could still potentially hit an iceberg today, especially if it navigates through icy waters near the poles or along routes like the North Atlantic, where icebergs are commonly found. The cost of a ticket on the Titanic varied based on the class of service a passenger chose.

How many cruise ships have sunk since the Titanic?

In years to come, there may not be cause for distinction as the fate of the ocean liner is still unknown. Perhaps instead of being a passenger ship, the focus will be more on transporting cargo. These vessels are no longer created because cruise ships can do similar things. Modern cruises are capable of going long distances and going through poor weather conditions. And as the popularity of cruising grew there was a new alliance formed between the former foes. While the old ocean liners used to operate direct line voyages between cities, cruise ships often do round-trip voyages from one central hub.

Titanic vs. Modern Cruise Ship: Technology

These kinds of ships travel at a scheduled time and in a proper long route. They may look alike to the everyday onlooker, but cruise ships and ocean liners are really two very different types of vessel. Ocean liners are built for speed, enabling them to maintain scheduled voyages even in challenging weather conditions.

Multiple balconies line the sides of the ship, giving some an almost “top-heavy” appearance. While many lines struggled, several were able to adapt to the jet age, introducing a new style of dual-purpose liner. Examples of these ships include the Home Lines’ Oceanic, Holland America’s Rotterdam and Cunard’s QE2. The Titanic had a high environmental impact, primarily due to its reliance on coal power. Coal-fired steam engines powered the massive vessel, releasing large amounts of soot into the atmosphere. Additionally, the inefficient combustion process and the lack of modern pollution controls meant that it also emitted a variety of pollutants, including sulfur compounds and ash.

A first class suite, the epitome of luxury aboard the Titanic, would cost a passenger about $4,350, equivalent to around $133,132 today. Those who opted for a regular first class berth would have paid significantly less, around $150, which translates to about $4,591 today. Of course, when it comes to great food on a cruise, it's not only about the choice of restaurants. Some of our favourite foodie-themed cruises are onboard ships with just a single restaurant, such as Royal Clipper. Because when the food is truly excellent (and when there's a special dinner created by celebrity chef, James Martin), you have to wonder whether you need more choice after all... These kinds of ships don’t face many weather difficulties as they travel in a pleasurable way and much more closer to the coast and not through the mid-ocean.

Design Elements

Cruise ships, on the other hand, prioritize leisure and recreation, offering onboard amenities and multiple destination experiences. I remember being told by a Cunard engineering officer that Queen Mary 2 could cross the Atlantic in five days with no trouble. As more and more shipping companies experienced financial woes in the 1960s, in many cases it simply became too expensive to fuel their ships.

Q2: Can I Cruise Alone? Are There Single Cabins?

For those looking to extend their experience, the ship offers hotel accommodations. Staying onboard allows you to fully immerse yourself in the Queen Mary’s rich heritage, with each room uniquely styled to reflect different eras of her service. The views of Long Beach’s skyline from the ship decks are mesmerizing, especially at sunset. For an ocean liner, there is comfort, but it sails more with the destination in mind as activities tend to be more scaled back. Passengers experience fine dining, and they can also work out in gyms, relax in a spa, go to a swimming pool, and enjoy space on the top deck.

Most of today’s cruise ships are very relaxed regarding dress codes, but Cunard is more formal. If you do not enjoy this onboard experience, this may not be the cruise for you. Modern cruise ships are built with the onboard experience as being the main factor that affects design. When pressurised aircraft like the Lockheed Constellation and Douglas DC-6 were introduced in the late 40s, aircraft were able to link Europe and America in a matter of hours. But flights linking Australia, America, Asia and Africa required numerous fuelling stops, making the flying experience less than ideal.

Recreational facilities like rock climbing walls, mini-golf courses, and laser tag offer fun for all ages, ensuring that entertainment is a high point of the cruise experience. The cabin facilities on the Titanic varied significantly across its class system. First-class passengers enjoyed spacious, beautifully decorated rooms with fine furnishings that resembled luxury hotel rooms. Second-class cabins, while less opulent than those in first-class, still offered a good level of comfort with features such as oak paneling and private washbasins.

Ocean liners need to be fast enough to cover long distances and not be slowed down by rough or inclement weather. Passenger ships competed for the illustrious Blue Riband, awarded for the fastest eastbound and westbound transatlantic crossings. The last ocean liner to win it was the SS United States, when she captured it in 1952 from RMS Queen Mary.
