Our Fleet

norwegian cruise ships

That tells you just how much the cruise industry has grown in recent years. Under development since 2017, these ships mark Norwegian's first new class of vessel in more than a decade. At 143,535 tons, they are notably smaller than the ships the line has been adding in recent years — a factor that will give them access to smaller ports around the world. The Prima class of ships is the latest and greatest at Norwegian Cruise Line — the vessels that every NCL fan wants to book.

Built by Lloyd Werft in Germany, Norwegian Sun was the last Sun-class ship. She was launched in 2001 in a dual christening ceremony with sister ship Norwegian Star. Dine, dance, laugh, and relax with onboard activities, premier entertainment, and unforgettable shore excursions.

Norwegian Escape

Including the just-unveiled Norwegian Viva, that's a 28% increase in its fleet size in just five years. The Prima Class vessels are under construction at a Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy. Additionally, three more ships in this Prima Class series are on order for delivery in 2026, 2027 and 2028, respectively. Knowing the answer is more important than you might think if you're planning a Norwegian cruise. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices.

In 2015, on NCL Sun and NCL Sky ships was introduced fare-inclusive open bars for all passengers 21 years and older. However, this program was terminated in 2019 (effective for itineraries on or after September 7, 2019). On October 17, 2012, NCLH and Meyer Werft reached an agreement for the construction of two new Breakaway-Plus class vessels with scheduled delivery in 2015 and 2017. In September 2013, the two new boats were named Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss, through an online campaign. The "Breakaway-Plus" project's contract value was estimated to be EUR 1.4 billion (USD 1.92 billion). Two more ships were ordered on July 14, 2014, to enter service in 2018 and 2019.

Pride of America notably flies a U.S. flag and operates with a mostly U.S. crew, in keeping with regulations governing cruise itineraries that only include U.S. ports. At 155,873 tons, Norwegian Epic currently ranks as the 34th biggest cruise vessel in the world. Notably, it was the world's third-largest ship when it debuted in 2010.

Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. Known for its "freestyle" cruising, the laid-back Norwegian experience is all about choice, offering one of the largest selections of dining and entertainment venues per ship. Plus, with Norwegian's Free At Sea offer, every cruise fare includes a choice of things like free Wi-Fi, specialty dining, drinks or excursions.

NCL ships are big (to really large), well-equipped, offering feature amenities and onboard activities, and sailing worldwide. The company's new program was named "Premium All Inclusive" and is included in NCL's fares. The new program is only available to travelers living in select countries and as destinations - on cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, Asia, Bermuda, Caribbean, Europe, Panama Canal, South America.

Other interior attractions and activities

They are the first two of a new series of six vessels that will transform the brand. Measuring about 143,500 tons a piece, these two new ships are about 17% smaller than Norwegian's biggest vessels. One step down in size from the Breakaway Plus ships are the still-quite-large Breakaway-class ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — and the one-of-a-kind Norwegian Epic.

In December 2016, NCLH (shipowner) received permission to operate cruises to Cuba, beginning March 2017. Starting June 2 through December 29, 2023, Norwegian Sky sails 3- and 4-day roundtrips from Miami Florida, calling at Freeport, Nassau, and Great Stirrup Cay. Sailing roundtrip from Miami FL, Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape offer a mix of 5- to 9-day roundtrips to Eastern-Western Caribbean. (November 19 through December 3, 2023) NCL Prima from PortMiami offers 3x 7-day Western Caribbean voyages to Harvest Caye Belize, Cozumel Mexico, Isla Roatan Honduras. (December 2022 and March 2023) NCL Prima from Port Canaveral offers day roundtrips to Western Caribbean. Beginning March 20, 2022, Jewel is the first NCL ship to offer roundtrip Panama Canal sailings from Panama City (Colon and Fuerte Amador).

Some are jampacked with fun zones that make them perfect for families, while others are geared toward couples and retirees. Some ships have attributes that make them stand out for luxury, solo or budget travelers. Dating to 2001, Norwegian Sun is one of Norwegian's oldest and smallest vessels, and it lacks many of the family-focused onboard attractions that are typical for the line's newer and bigger vessels. You won't find big waterparks, go-kart racing tracks or laser tag zones on this ship. As of August 2023[update], Norwegian Cruise Line operates 19 cruise ships, with four on order.

Most evenings you'll see men in dark jeans or khakis and collared shirts, and women in blouses with slacks or skirts, or sundresses. Don't be surprised if you see people in shorts in the main dining rooms. Only solos staying in the solo cabins (via keycards) can access the Studio Lounge, meaning that you and your new solo friends will have the place to yourselves. For would-be Norwegian cruisers, Norwegian Sky's shorter sailings out of Miami serve as a sort of "test the line" opportunity. Their short time frame and low pricing mean you're not out a lot in time or money if you don't love it as much as you hoped.

Instead, the line offers extra-charge laundry and dry cleaning services. Still, as we'll explain below, it offers a wide range of accommodations, some of which fall squarely in the luxury segment. In some cases, its ships have an exclusive area full of high-end cabins and suites called The Haven that comes with its own private pools, lounge areas and even restaurants.

Even ships that were built as recently as 2017, such as Norwegian Joy, have already been refurbished, to keep Norwegian’s cruise ships looking and feeling fresh. So what do you need to know if you’re planning an NCL cruise, but you’re just not sure which NCL cruise ship to take? Here are the line’s cruise ships, from newest to oldest, as well as what you need to know about each ship class.

The Waterfront is located on Deck 8 of each of the ships, which is one of the main decks for restaurants on them all. Some of the extra-charge restaurants come with a flat fee (the teppanyaki outlets are $59 per person, not including the cost of drinks). One thing you need to know upfront about going on a Norwegian cruise is that there are a lot of extra charges — and sometimes quite high extra charges — on the line's ships, particularly for things like restaurants. Norwegian is also heralded for kicking off the trend of more solo cabins on cruise ships. In 2010, it debuted an entire zone of small studio cabins for one — 128 in all — on its then-new, 4,070-passenger Norwegian Epic, and it has since added them to seven more new ships.

You'll find a decent number of people from other English-speaking countries, and smaller numbers from South America and Europe. On European cruises, North Americans still dominate but you'll find more people from the United Kingdom and other European countries. One ship, Norwegian Joy, was designed specifically for the Asian market, and the vast majority of passengers on this ship will be from China. At 169,116 tons and carrying 3,958 passengers, Norwegian Encore is the largest ship in the Norwegian fleet.
